Adopt a Monument

My name is Jasmin Wachowicz & I was born on the 21 st of May 1993.

The Port Elliot Well

We should keep this well because it was Port Elliot's first reticulated water supply. Port Elliot would not exist if it hadn't been for the well. That's why I think that we should save the well. It is part of our history.

I think it is really special that some people have the heart to save something that most people would think insignificant.

Once we restore the well, a sign will be put up. It will explain about the well & will have a name: PORT ELLIOT HERITAGE WELL. I think that the name is simple but self- explanatory.

Some good ways to stop people knocking it down before we restore it are: Sending out letters to get people to understand, sending out a nice brochure to the people, talking to people about it, & putting up road signs to direct people to the well so that they can see what needs to be done.

I am a young girl at 10 years of age trying to Save Our Past For A Better Future.

I have also entered an idea for a letter, a colour brochure & what I think a brochure needs

NOTE: The brochure is a draft copy

My Idea For A Letter

This is what I think a letter to the community about the well should say.

“Dear Resident,

You as a Fleurieau Peninsula resident may not believe that something as insignificant as a well is important or if it should be saved. But think back to when you were a child & took part in Football or Netball & won a trophy or a medal. Or maybe you had a favourite teddy bear or toy? Think how dear that was to you. Would you want someone to come along & break it? No I don't think you would. Well it is just the same for us. The well is very important to Port Elliot & it's residents & we don't want you or other people to come along & knock it down or break it.

It was the first water reticulation site & waterworks in Port Elliot. The well is the last of the three wells whose purpose was to prevent brackish surface water from entering the waterways for the local residents of Port Elliot in 1852.

Yours Sincerely,

The Young People Trying To Save Our Past For a Better Future.”

Brochure

These are things I think a brochure should or shouldn't have.

•  It should have bright pictures

•  It should have informative writing

•  It should have a reason to save the well

•  It should say why the well is important

•  It should be colourful but not so that you can't read the writing

•  It should make the reason to save the well & why it is important to save it very clear

•  It should have pictures of the well

•  It shouldn't have too much information

•  It shouldn't be boring to read.
