"The Tomb of the Pharaohs...."

Artlab is committed to promoting the ideals of heritage conservation among school students R-10 and raising awareness of art conservation as a career option. We have been involved in a number of initiatives, including activities for school holidays, Science Week, the Royal Adelaide Show, "Something on Sundays" and "The Case of the Missing Mummy".
Past programs have included: "In the Tomb of the Pharaohs" Run in conjunction with the South Australian Museum's "Case of the Missing Mummy", Chris Holtham and Justin Gare from Artlab, gave a total of 1,300 students an insight on the Pharaoh's tombs and their precious contents from a conservation perspective. Years 5 to 8 students from 25 schools had a chance to get up close and personal with a "dummy mummy", while at the same time viewing eerie MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and x-ray images of real Nubian mummy "George" and and array of mummified cats! Tapa cloth-making Exploring the techniques of this method of making cloth from
mulberry bark and decorating it with natural pigments, practiced
throughout the South Pacific region. Mat decorating The children learn about the use of non-acidic mat board to
mount a photograph or postcard by making and decorating their
own: gaining some valuable insights on the preservation of paper-based
items. Paste paper making The time honoured process of making an art medium from starch
paste and paint is explored, as well as some of the interesting
techniques for applying the paste and creating patterns. “Wanted dead or alive” The past lives on through paper, and what more infamous period
in Australian history than 1830-1890 when bushrangers roamed the
outback. Children feel “wanted” for all the wrong
reasons, when their name appears on a wanted poster and learn
a little bit about preserving our history on paper at the same
time. “Attack of the creepy crawlies” Children learn about the damage that can be caused to artefacts
and precious family treasures by insects. They get a chance to
get up close and personal with some insect specimens and examples
of the damage they cause, as well as completing some fun colouring
