Beswick Pottery Horse
This Beswick Horse is owned by a private client. It is an unusual example of Beswick pottery and was probably purchased in the 1960s by the owner’s grandmother. It has sentimental value to the owner.

The item had been broken a number of times and had been previously repaired when it was brought to Artlab for treatment. The old repairs had discoloured and looked unsightly. The current breaks meant that the horse could not stand.

Conservation Treatment
It was necessary to take apart all previous repairs. This was done with careful and prolonged exposure to solvents. Water and detergent were used to clean all surfaces. The ceramic was rinsed and left to air dry.

After the ceramic was thoroughly dry, it was re-adhered using a conservation grade adhesive that has excellent aging properties so that it should not discolour with time. Tapes were used to support the ceramic whilst the adhesive dried.

Small losses either side of the joins were filled, shaped, and in-painted. The horse can now go back on display and continue to bring joy to the owner.
