Knit the Douglas Mawson Balaclava Workshop
A South Australian Museum and Artlab Australia Presentation
Date: Saturday 28 February 2015
Time: 2.00 to 4.00pm
Where: Megafauna Gallery, Level 3, The South Australian Museum, North Terrace, Adelaide, South Australia 5000
Knitting Workshop:
When Douglas Mawson travelled to the Antarctic he took a hand knitted balaclava with him. The iconic image of Mawson wearing the balaclava appeared on the $100 note from 1984 -1996.
Working from the original balaclava, which is now in the South Australian Museum’s Mawson collection, Artlab’s Kristin Phillips and master knitter Lianne Gould have drafted a pattern so that an exact replica can be knitted.
This is your chance to learn about Mawson’s extraordinary adventures, looking at his famous trips to the Antarctic as well as the textiles and knitted items that travelled with him.
Using the pattern, which is available from the South Australian Museum shop, participants will learn tips and tricks for knitting an exact replica. Needles and practice yarn will be provided and while there won’t be time to finish the balaclava in the class, you will be able to take your knitted sample home with you.
Participants must be comfortable knitting and purling.
This is a free workshop however participants will require their own copy of the knitting pattern. If you don’t already have one, it is available from the South Australian Museum shop for $15.
