Artlab Tours
Artlab Australia offers community groups tours of our unique conservation centre nestled in the picturesque North Terrace cultural precinct. These tours are free of charge.

You will observe conservators at work in our five laboratories providing you the opportunity to see
items such as large paintings, sculptures, small objects, beautiful books, prints and colourful textiles to name
a few.

Our expert guides will take you on a tour winding its way through our large building where you will visit the projects, objects, paper and books, paintings and textiles laboratories. The staff will explain and demonstrate their innovative techniques and answer any questions you may have.

Artlab tours introduce you to this exciting and dynamic working environment where our conservators are challenged everyday to create innovative techniques dedicated to preserving the State’s collections, family treasures and historical items from all over Australia and overseas.

Tour information
Tours are for community groups and are scheduled on the second and fourth Wednesdays from February to November.

The tours are scheduled at either 10.00am or 2.00pm and take approximately one hour.

Tour sizes are limited to twelve only but if your group has twenty four members, we can accommodate two groups at the same time.

We do request that artworks in the building are not touched or handled and large bags are not permitted in the laboratories. We have a secure lock up area where bags can be stored.

Food and drink cannot be taken on the tour and the taking of photographs is strictly not permitted.

Tour members will be on their feet for the whole hour so please let us know if there are any special requirements for group members. This allows us to discuss any difficulties you might encounter and to offer you the best possible service.

Our location
Artlab is located off Kintore Avenue in Adelaide’s city centre. Please enter via Morgan Thomas Lane at the rear of the State Library.

We are situated in the first courtyard on the left. If you look up high you will see the big Artlab sign on the red brick building.

Please gather in Artlab’s reception foyer and our friendly guides will take you through our tour procedures.

Bookings essential
Please contact our tour coordinator to make a booking and for further information. Our tours are very popular so please book well in advance.
