Artlab’s Textiles Conservator prepared this iconic gown for an exhibition at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG).

Kristin Phillips, Senior Textiles Conservator at Artlab Australia, travelled to Hobart recently to work on the wedding dress worn by Kylie Minogue, during the famous wedding scene on Neighbours, between and Charlene Mitchell (Kylie Minogue) and Scott Robinson (Jason Donovan) on 1 July 1987.

The dress is from the collections of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) and Kristin worked in their conservation studio to prepare the gown for the exhibition, The Wedding Dress: An Australian TV Icon, which opened today in their Salon Gallery.

Although the wedding dress was generally in good condition, it required some attention and care. It was carefully cleaned and a few small repairs were carried out.

A new mannequin was modified to replicate an accurate shape for a 1980’s wedding dress and the gown was carefully fitted in preparation for display.

Kristin said of the experience, “I am old enough to remember the excitement in the media and watching the wedding on TV when it happened. It was a delight to have the opportunity to work on such an Australian Icon.”
