A client bought in an oil on canvas on Consultation Day and after receiving advice from a Paintings Conservator, approved a treatment plan.

‘Skagen’ by Nunreich, depicts fishermen looking out to sea at Skagen, North Jutland, Denmark, a popular motif in late 19th century and early 20th century Danish art, illustrating the long flat coastline and the men who worked by the sea.

The canvas had accumulated years of soot and smoke, building up into a heavy grey layer obscuring the image.

The Paintings conservator was able to remove the soiling slowly with the use of swabs revealing the original subtle colours.
